Caravan

Your own home on wheels – sounds like freedom, flexibility and adventure, doesn’t it? That’s exactly what we had in mind when we started thinking about caravans. First of all, we took a close look at the campsites in Istria to find the perfect base for our plans. We quickly realized that Croatia offers an impressive selection of campsites with numerous amenities – for a certain price, of course. But before we could enjoy the view on the first pitch, we faced a major challenge: we needed a caravan.

Our search was anything but easy. From the “almost as good as new” advertised model with water damage to the self-built “gem”, everything was there – just nothing suitable. And then there was the technical challenge with our car, which first had to be converted for use as a caravan. You can find all information about our decision here 13 years – The path to our dream of emigrating

But the search for a caravan was just one chapter in our story. In another section of our journey, we share further insights into the challenges and experiences that have accompanied us along the way.

1. pitches in Istria: The first realization

2. the towing vehicle debacle: small but fatal

As luck would have it, our first stumbling block didn’t come when we were looking for a caravan, but with our car. When we bought the car, we were assured that the towbar was included. Unfortunately, it turned out that it was only a rear carrier preparation – ideal for bicycles, but definitely not for a caravan.

The insight: No caravan without a real clutch

When we tried to hitch up a small single-axle trailer, we quickly realized that this device was anything but suitable. After a few discussions and a handful of euros for the conversion, we were able to solve this problem. The path to the caravan search was finally clear.

We agreed right from the start: no new caravan. After all, we only wanted to use it for a temporary period. Our requirements were simple: functional, clean and affordable. But the reality was different. From caravans with massive hail damage (affectionately known as “cellulite”) to water damage disasters (our “submarine”), everything was there.

After four months of searching, we were finally successful! On 11 square meters, we found enough space for two adults and a dog – which, however, was limited to eating and sleeping. As a little extra, we got an awning and a towbar bike rack for free. Works for us!

After the purchase, we quickly realized that the caravan needed an upgrade. The equipment would have been sufficient for a two-week vacation, but for an indefinite period as a home? No, thank you.

◉ Separating toilet: No more chemical maces.

◉ New upholstery covers: More comfort and less retro look.

◉ Fresh and waste water tanks: With a capacity of 80 liters each, we are well equipped.

◉ photovoltaic system: A self-sufficient power supply is a must.

◉ Satellite dish: We don’t want to miss out on entertainment on the road either.

As with every project, there were unexpected challenges. The electrics were outdated, the water pipes were questionably laid and the washroom was not only leaking but also contaminated.

Our biggest highlight? The sleeping area. In order to be able to use our own mattresses, we built a new substructure for slatted frames. After all, a little comfort is allowed, right?

One big advantage of the caravan is that we don’t have to rely exclusively on campsites. Our internet research revealed that many Croatian farmers allow overnight stays in their fields – with their permission, of course. To take advantage of this freedom, we set up the caravan to be as self-sufficient as possible:

◉ Large water tanks: With 80 liters of fresh water, we don’t have to fill up every day.

◉ Photovoltaics: Power supply even without a socket.

◉ Storage space for food: For longer stays away from civilization.

◉ 1. how much does a used caravan cost? The prices vary greatly. Our caravan was around 6,000 euros, but the costs for the conversion quickly added up.

◉ 2.Is self-sufficiency really necessary? That depends on how you want to use your caravan. If you mainly stay on campsites, you will need less self-sufficiency than for off-grid adventures.

◉ 3. Is a caravan worthwhile for the transitional period? Definitely! With a little patience and creativity, you can turn a simple caravan into a cozy home.

The conversion work has not yet been completed, but we are optimistic that we will finish on time. Despite the challenges, it was a valuable experience that not only challenged us in terms of craftsmanship, but also mentally. If you’re thinking of buying a caravan yourself, you can be sure that it won’t be boring.
